About Me

I’m an experienced secondary school English teacher, teaching on the North Yorkshire Coast. Inspired by a school research project into Carol Dweck’s Growth Mindset, I enrolled for a MA (Res) at the University of York, studying any potential associations between mindset interventions and student effort.

It was initial research into this field which led me down the rabbit-hole of exploring metacognitive theory, igniting my interest into how it could be applied in the classroom. Bitten by the research bug, I’m currently in the final year of a PhD exploring exactly this, while also applying and experimenting my ideas in the classroom.

For anyone interested in finding out more about my PhD studies, they are currently registered with the Open Science Framework and can be accessed here (the role of metacognition & self-regulation in GCSE English Literature classes) and here (teacher attitudes & understanding of metacognition & self-regulation).

I am writing this blog to explore research, connect with others interested in metacognition, and share my experiences of fostering a metacognitve approach in the classroom.

When not teaching or researching, I can be found enjoying time with my kids, family and friends, or reading, running and helping run a local football club – not necessarily all at the same time!
